Last year, he attended one that he didn't really enjoy and, unfortunately, I had signed him up for the entire summer. The reason for that was that he had previously attended the younger-kids'-version of the same camp and it was great -- but when he turned six and went to the same camp for 6-9 year olds, it was run by a different group of people at a different location. Also, he went from being the big kid in the little kids camp where everything was familiar to being the little kid at the big kids camp in a new place, with MUCH less structure.
One thing I have discovered is that, now that he is older, there are many more camps to choose from, and lots of them have fun themes. So... this summer will be different!
My current plan is to sign him up for 4 or 5 weeks of "Adventure Camp" which was recommended by the parents of several of his friends -- it's a non-themed summer camp with lots of activity and play time. This is the description from the website:
"Adventure Camp’s main goal is to get out to have an ADVENTURE every day. This means seeking out and exploring real nature (2 days/ week), splashing around in an exciting and varying water adventure (2 days/ week), and also taking in a wide array of the city’s shows and exhibits carefully chosen to appeal to our campers (1 day/ week). We believe in making use of public transportation and walking. Living in amazing Washington, DC we have SO many Adventures to choose from!"
In addition to Adventure Camp, I am hoping to sign him up for some combination of:
- one or more weeks of "Mad Science" camp (probably "Rockets and the Physics of Rocket Flight" and maybe "Red Hot Robots" if I can schedule it)
- a week of music camp (probably "Ukelele and Percussion Exploration Camp")
- a week of swim camp (this is proving elusive so far, but I will find one)
It should be a fun summer for Benji!
